We bickered every day, but after I came back from the military, I can't stop seeing them differently.
I have an older brother who doesn't share a single drop of blood with me. We became siblings when my parents adopted my dad's friend's son. It was awkward at first, but we quickly turned into real siblings who wrestled over the TV remote and teased each other about our embarrassing pasts.
However, things shifted after he returned from the military. He still pokes fun at me and messes around, but there are these weird, fleeting moments. He'll hesitate right before messing up my hair, or his face will stiffen when I mention someone else. And honestly... I'm starting to struggle to see him purely as "family" too.
Because we've spent our whole lives bickering, these feelings have to stay a secret. We might not be blood-related, but we're definitely siblings. I just don't know what to do with these emotions anymore.
"...When did you get so grown up? Never mind, forget I said anything."
